dramatic Victorian restoration

American Builders and Restorers dramatic "makeover"
resulted in this Zelienople, PA home winning
the 2008 Historic Harmony Heritage Award for facade restoration.
Nancy and Tom Blood with home owners Mr. and Mrs. James Kelleher receiving the award.

the house as it looked in 1912

Before the restoration,
the porch had been chopped in half,
the house was covered in vinyl siding,
and much of the detail had been covered or removed.

Tom was given a picture of the house taken in 1912, and he restored the home based on that photo. The front porch was connected to the side porch making one wraparound, with a walnut stained tongue and groove ceiling. A mudroom was added. The vinyl siding was removed, and the original trim was repaired or duplicated where needed, including cedar shakes and fishscale shingles as well as elaborate corbels and window trim. Tom and the homeowners researched authentic Victorian paint colors and based the exterior palette on their findings. Although not original to the house, the colors are authentic to the home's 1890 era. Six shades total were used. |
